AV and Firewall stopped working

I have Vista Home Premium and until last night I was running AVG Free
edition and ZoneAlarm Firewall. Suddenly this morning, both my AV and
Firewall refuse to run stating that they are "Not Valid Win32 Applications".
I get the same alert when I try to uninstall them. I finally got them
removed in Safe Mode, and DLd and installed Avast AV. Avast now reports the
same error as AVG did, "Not a Valid Win32 Application".

Any suggestions?
