Throwing an idea out there. Is there any benefit to excluding the
%windir%\softwaredistribution folder from AV scanning? The risks are
somewhat obvious, but does anyone know of any malware/spyware/virii taking
advantage of this folder?

I feel I may need to clarify

Using WinXP and 2K, manually updating, the scan process appears to take a
long amount of time. My theory was that if the softwaredistribution
folder was excluded from Antivirus Scanning it may speed it up? Any
thoughts?

Steve,

I am unaware of any malware *** as of yet *** that attempts to hide or
run itself from that folder. Not having it scanned by an AV should not
be much of a security risk and in fact, may actually help out if one has
issues installing updates.
I've always suspected certain security suites/AVs as being the cause of
data corruption in SoftwareDistribution or, preventing Access to it
due to a Permissions issue.
