Steve,
I am unaware of any malware *** as of yet *** that attempts to hide or
run itself from that folder. Not having it scanned by an AV should not
be much of a security risk and in fact, may actually help out if one has
issues installing updates.
I've always suspected certain security suites/AVs as being the cause of
data corruption in SoftwareDistribution or, preventing Access to it
due to a Permissions issue.
