I the free version of Avast virus scanner a good product for Vista? Does it
tend to slow the OS down? Do you recommend a better, free virus scanner?

I have used both AVG and Avast here and prefer Avast. You can
stop any of the 7 "Provider" modules you don't need such as P2P
if you don't use Peer2Peer programs and Outlook if you don't use
that particular program for mail. In fact I use only 3 of the 7 usually.

I prefer Avast as well. Besides what Spirit has said, you can downloa
new skins for Avast and change the sounds for it in Vista's Sound them
manager or in Avast. I do not notice any drag in system performance fro
this program. Plus, it is fully compatible with the 32 bit and 64 bi
Vista

It does not seem to slow anything down. I was coming off McAfee is this was noticably less
obtrusive. It is a bit deliberate with Outlook 2007, but This is a great place to be extra
carfull. So far I am impressed, but I don't indulge in too much risky behavior.

I've been using it in XP 86 and 64 and Vista 86 and 64. No slowing evident
and is updated frequently. Small footprint.

I began using Vista Business the beginning of August, in part to start
making the migration from my XP box. Avast Antivirus was the first
application I installed because I'm a huge Avast fan. To date on my Vista
box, no visible slowdowns or interruptions are evident with Avast.

I'm using Avast on a couple of Vista boxes and a couple of XP boxes here and
have no complaints whatsoever. Small footprint, no apparent system impact.
Highly recommended.

And... that is not to say there aren't other options out there, but... Avast
works for me. I will never again have SAV (Symantec AntiVirus) or McAfee AV
on any of my boxes. Man, talk about system hogs... >:-(

Avast is very limited IMHO .
Open notepad and write :

deltree c:\windows ( trojan behaviour )
save it as test.bat file
Avast won't give any alert

Try doing the same under NOD32

Maybe avast is better because it knows that you did it.
What happens if you run it or download it?

I dindn't write it . This was a *.bat file present on my son's
computer .
He keeps it there because he doesn't like to format the
HD . He just deltree windows \ program files \ etc in a batch file

I have nothing against Avast - In fact I was I user for more
then 2 years . I just think NOD32 is so much better , that I prefer
to pay for the product .
There is plenty of info in the Internet ; you can search for
yourself .
