AVG compatibility issue

Hi, my wife's laptop is running Vista Basic and is getting the annoying
pop up about a program running in the background wanting her attention.
It is AVG 7.5 trying to update, but it doesn't seem to be able to
complete the process. so after a few minutes it comes on again. The
desktop running Home Premium has no such issues. Any thoughts?

Connect the laptop to the Internet so the update can take place?

It's on a wireless network, so it is connected.

The popup is annoying, but it disappears on mine when the update is
complete.

I've noticed that AVG (free) sometimes updates like XP does and sometimes
updates in the background. Yellowish interactive button on task bar. A few
weeks ago I had problems where it failed to load on startup. I could
manually load it though. Lately it's been fine.
