Hi, with the help of the group, I could install AVG Free Anti-virus properly
last week. Unfortunately I got some problem yesterday. I could not
actually "update". The update and install windows came up and it said the
priority update was installed but the icon was still grey and it did it
again and again to download and reinstall the upgrade every hour. Please
help.

Try this: Uninstall AVG, reboot and reinstall.

I had a similar problem as well but I couldn't get the uninstaller to work
without erroring.

Download the lastest version of AVG and when you double click this file, you
will be given a screen that will uninstall AVG. Use this to uninstall your
old version that is not working. After a reboot, use the same downloaded
file to reinstall AVG.

I use avast on Vista and it's very good. I think it's on the same level or
better than AVG. Small footprint, updates automatically and if you use
office has a utility that scans your e-mails.

Reboot the computer. One of their updates "stuck" and a reboot will clear
it.

This is not so much for you but for other posters who contributed. This is just a piece of my mind.

Since I installed Vista first time I noticed a peculiar thing. MS does not recommend an antiviral program for you anymore. in XP a popup will show up and warn you that you do not have a protection. Vista conspicuously dispatched with it. That ran my thinking.

This is what I found. It is just a bunch of conjectures based on my own experience, nothing more.

MS has been reinforcing security vigorously be catching vulnerabilities malicious software writers exploit and fixes them quickly. Individual users can take a vacation and leave their machine and they will be vulnerable next time they start them because the haven't installed the update on time but in the corporate world it is different. The viruses can thrive only when they can infect a large number (threshold number) of computers at once. if the number of computers with vulnerabilities is small the virus cannot spread. It may ruin just one computer.

All antivirus packages present a drag on your system and create unforeseen problems. Overall they are more than a nuisance than help. This strictly IMHO.

Vista has a comprehensive firewall, many layers of security. Other malware can be prevented by SB S&D.

After reviewing the matter I decided that May 2006 was the last time I downloaded CA antivirus (for an XP). All they do is to duplicate Vista.

I do not have any antivirus on any of my computers (four). On one of them my secretary goes to crazy places and occasionally she gets malware. SB S&D is run and malware is no more.

In short it is more prophylaxis rather than treatment now as far as viruses go.

If I download anything that is marked "free" I take at least five circles around it to sniff out all problems.

A very small piece from a very small mind.
So now you are not only a top posting moron, you are posting in HTML too. I
guess no one should be surprised. Why don't you add a few graphics? You
already have your email address for all to see.

When did MS ever recommend an antiviral program? Your thinking definitely
has the runs.

This is what I found. It is just a bunch of conjectures based on my own
experience, nothing more.

And by now, everyone knows about your idiotic conjectures based on your
limited experience. Who cares what you think? Only you.

How will you even know if you get a virus till things start glitching up?
You had better realize that Spybot S&D doesn't catch everything. You didn't
even know about running it in safe mode. You have no clue what kind of
malware you have.

In short it is more prophylaxis rather than treatment now as far as viruses
go.

Your parents should have used prophylaxis.

That's because you can't read anything beyond the word free. You don't have
the mental resources to determine what is legitmate and what isn't.

The poster would need permission from your parole officer to send you
something. Oh yea, didn't we see someone who looks just like YOU on To
Catch A Predator? Just FYI.
