My AVG home edition security Firewall will not work with Vista. I have
tried turning off the Windows firewall, but I still cant get the firewall to
work, all the boxes remain greyed out. Can anyone help? Should I try
reinstalling AVG?

Last I heard AVG had not brought out a Vista version yet.

Hi,

I would suggest uninstalling the AVG firewall and just use the firewall
built into Vista.

How is this system connecting to the internet, dial-up or Cable/DSL?

I have uninstalled AVG now, I connect via broadband.

I am actually going to take the computer for a health check as I am having
several problems with Vista.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Is there a router between the Modem and the PC(s)?
Using the two way firewall in Vista and having a router in place should be
all you need.

What are you using for antivirus software?

Before having the computer check out by someone else, you may want to post
the problem(s) you are having with Vista here, or in the appropriate
newsgroup and see if we can help.

I have AVG with firewall..works fine with Vista...when you install
AVG/firewall it shuts down conflicting issues such as the windows
firewall...maybe a reinstall is worth a shot..

Thanks for your help and advice

I have sent the computer away to be checked, mainly becuase there were other
issues with Vista, not being able to access the internet with explorer being
the main one, I could get email. Also the keyboard stopped working and then
the mouse, then they worked again! I am not very good with the technical
stuff and it all seemed a bit much to deal with.

I will try AVG again when I get it back, everything except the firewall
worked. I do have a router between the computer and the modem.

Hi,

Let us know how you make out.

Once you get the system back, create a new restore point. And create a new
restore point before installing anything.

Having a router, the Vista firewall is all you should need.

I would not suggest using AVG with Vista.

NOD32 would be my first choice.
NOD32 Antivirus Software for Windows from ESET
http://www.eset.com/products/windows.php

Then for free, Avira AntiVir.
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

I use AVG with Vista, but use the Vista firewall. Or whatever you call it.
Never a problem

The remaining problem is what gets OUT of the computer.
I well aware of the possible configurations of vista's firewall ,
and it's not user friendly for the average user .
