AVI & MOV files cannot be indexed and cannot be copied, moved or deleted

Vista Home Premium 32

I can't seem to copy, move or delete (or, in fact, do anything) a bunch of
MOV and AVI files. There sizes range from 200KB to 3+GB.

What seems to happen is that as soon as I open an Explorer window with
these files in, the indexing bar starts up and never finishes. It gets
slower and slower and s l o w e r a n d s l o w e r, and it
never reaches the right-hand edge. (I've left it for several hours to
complete. No dice.)

This means that whenever I try to do anything with these files, the
dreaded 'Calculating..." box comes up and just stays there (for many
hours).

I've tried from a 'DOS' prompt and I've installed Total Commander and it's
the same: nothing seems to want to touch them.

A Safe Mode command window *does* work, however. That's not a solution
though, is it?

I've already ensured that MOV and AVI files are excluded from my indexing
filetypes, so I'm at a loss to understand why the green indexing bar
starts at all when looking at these files.

Anyone any clues? Solutions? Fixes?

as stated already some times, most probably the video codec crashes while
making the thumbnail thus blocking the file for some time

since its always the same lately, try either deactivating the thumbnail
generation or uninstall quicktime

btw the green bar is not indexing, just thumbnail generation

Ah, so *that's* what the green bar is for! Thanks!

Okay, I turned off thumbnail generation completely and I got no green bar
when I looked at a folder full of MOVs. One success!

I then tried to move a bunch of them to another folder and they apparently
moved instantly (at least, this time, their details immediately appeared
in the destination folder) but...

I still get the "Calculating time remaining..." dialog box.

[pause]

Okay, I waited for 20 mins with no disc activity and it wasn't not going
to do anything else so I clicked the dialog's 'Cancel' button. That led
to it changing to a "Cancelling..." dialog box. I waited another 5 mins
and nothing happened so I then closed that box with the red X in the top
corner. And...

Er... The files had actually moved.

So, that's two successes!

Now, to make it three for three, I'll go and find out which MOV and AVI
codecs I'm using and give them a swift kick up the pants.

I already had that one from a few days ago.

See my reply to Jume. I may have found a temporary way around the
problem. I'll work on finding a more permanent solution.
