I have windows 7 and the latest windows media player. it won't play a .avi
audio file. I have installed the latest codecs and it says there are not any
new updates. The file does play with VLC Media Player, however. Am I
missing a setting or? Thanks. This is driving me crazy.

Install the DivX third-party codec (link below) and you should find that your
AVI files will play properly through WMP and any other media players you use.

http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack

Saying that, using WMP with external codecs like this DivX one can make it
all a bit sluggish - for video I generally prefer to use VLC, and just use
WMP for my music library.

The player supports DIVX/XVID by default upon Windows 7, so this is
probably something else.

The question would be what codec the file *does* use... =\

Speaking for myself only.
See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
