Avoid dupes during mailbox replace

A user who uses ActiveSync to sync with Outlook 2003 has
a corrupt Exchange mailbox. I need to delete and re-
create the mailbox. I plan to export his old mailbox to
a PST and import the PST to the new mailbox.

What do I need to do to make sure ActiveSync (v3.7.1)
does not create duplicates for folders he syncs?

Hi Jeff,

After selecting Inbox for synchronization in ActiveSync, e-mail messages are
synchronized as part of the general synchronization process. During
synchronization:

* Messages are copied from the Inbox folder and sub folders of Outlook on
your PC to the ActiveSync folder in Inbox on your device.

The operation explained above is a one way synchronization, therefore,
it will simply replace the messages in the Inbox of the PPC. You shouldn't
face any duplication problem here. However, for other PIM items, Activesync
will detect a few changes and display a Combine/Replace dialog stating the
following:

The following information type on your mobile device has items that have not
been synchronized with this computer before:

The Information type will be display example (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks)

* Combine the items on my device with the items on this computer.
* Replace the items on my device with the items on this computer.
* Do not synchronize this information type at this time.

You will need to select the option desired to proceed...

* Choosing the first option will combine all the information (Pocket PC +
Computer) on both the devices.
* Choosing the second option will copy all the information from the Computer
to the Pocket PC replacing all the information stored on the Pocket PC.
* The third option is self-explanatory.

The duplication problem is known to occur "only" when you use the "Combine
the items on my device with the items on this computer". If the data that
you are restoring is a recent data and not many entries or changes have been
made to the PPC, then I suggest you choose the second option. Choosing the
second option should result in all PIM information on the desktop getting
transferred to your PPC. This is your best bet to avoid duplication.

Before connecting the device to synchronize, it is adviceable you check for
the conflict
settings that have been set ---

1. Start Activesync on your desktop
2. Click Tools -> Options -> Rules and set the Desktop
option to "Leave the items unresolved".

If you end up having duplicates at any point of time, then download and use
the free Outlook Duplicate Remover utility, written by Fr. Simon Rundell,
available at the following site ---
