Avoid SP2 until bugs are fixed?

Would it be prudent to simply avoid SP2 until the bugs are fixed?? Although
its a 'critical update' ?
I'm new at computing; have Norton 2003 installed and frequently updated; am
having endless problems installing this service pak, and reading all the
forums has me petrified that I'll end up spending what precious little free
time I have on my home PC scrounging cyberspace for fixes to Windows
dilemmas.

Excellent question,Deej. The manufacturer's support team of my computer:
Falcon North West, informs me that they have been installling and delivering
systems for about 10 days now WITH the SP2 update with hardly any reported
trouble However, that's brand new computers only. Still, they love Norton
Ghost for system restore but have Litlle praise for Systemworks as it
adversely affects too many Windows XP services. I have been using Norton
Systemworks Pro 2003 for 15 months on two computers with Windows XP Pro and
suggest this: uninstall everything and reinstall Norton Anti-Virus and Ghost
only (if you have it...) There are just too many complications caused by the
other features to put up with. The word on the street is: back up everything,
erase the drive and install Windows XP fresh. Add the updates first, then the
mother board drivers, next the video card drivers and then reinstall all your
other progams. Symantec has a lot to fix on Norton! It's been said that 80%
of Windows problems are cause by two things: video card drivers and anti
virus software. Good Luck.

I have Norton AV 2004, SystemWorks 2003 and Ghost 2003 in
my pc. Service pack installed without issues.

Had a problem with the new WU that was caused by Steganos
Internet Anonym. Uninstalling this program solved the
problem.

The word on the street should be: don't believe in
everything you hear and have your own backups just in case.

SP-2 of today will be exactly the same as SP-2 in several months.
If all you do is wait "until the bugs are fixed" you will most likely
wait forever.
You need to research your particular hardware and software for
possible affects of SP-2.
You should also verify your computer is clean of viruses and spyware.
Otherwise there is no point in waiting since it is very unlikely SP-2
will be changed.

Jupiter, you are probably right that SP-2 will not be changed; however,
there will certainly be more updates coming along. My plan is to wait for
another update or two to appear, then add PS-2 and the newer updates. I
figure that will avoid a some problems. What do you think?

Review the purpose of why Windows XP SP2 was written and
released by Microsoft. While the general adage is not to
repair anything that is not broken, installing SP2 might
well be determined by whether or not the present Windows
XP system is running optimally with all of the critical
security updates already present and the system itself is
behind its own functioning firewall, anti-virus, and so
forth. If one does not have optimal third-party safety and
security systems already installed in the computer, then
Windows XP SP2 is a requirement...although be selective in
allowing what non-safety/non-security updates to install,
esp. those that may crash applications already in the
computer.

How long do you think MS will continue to provide Security Patches for Sp.1?
I suspect that after 1 year they will dry up because Sp.1 has been
superseded by Sp.2.

Hi

Lifecycle Supported Service Packs
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=lifesupsps

states that WinXP SP1 Pro will be fully supported for 2 years after
the release of SP2, and one year for WinXP SP1 Home.

This means you will get critical security updates for SP1 at least
up to August 2006 (and I would think that this would be relevant
for WinXP SP1 Home as well, as there is very little difference
between Pro and Home in this aspect).

And I would not be surprised if they will release security updates
even longer that that.

Hmmm...interesting way of saying that all post-SP2 security
updates will [continue to] be supportive of SP1. IOW, since
Service Packs are cumulative, SP2 contains all of the SP1
updates and should be backwards compatible. By the same token,
then, post-SP2 updates should continue to be compatible to SP1,
even with the advent of SP3 and so on.

Robert;
You may still wait for something that may never arrive.
Future updates may or may not effect issues relevant to you.

I would suggest research the current product.
If after researching you determine that there are no unresolvable
critical issues for you install SP-2 after preparing the computer:
