Hey Ian,
People have been experiencing this since Messenger's creation and it's actually very
difficult to sort out what's causing it.
Generally, it's some sort application or your screen saver that's keeping the input busy and
preventing Messenger from detecting you're away.
As a starting point, set Messenger to 1 minute with no other applications running and grab a
pepsi and chill for a bit -- see if it'll detect it then. Assuming that works, you can then
start to isolate what's causing it.
