What is the current service that fills the role of what Proxy Server used
to?

Can I setup some users so they go through this service and others not?
I thinking I'd like to restrict users by some sort of group.
I'm guessing it would also give me a report of where users have gone on the
Internet, is that true?
We have a public wireless access point that I don't want to restrict, or at
lease I know I can't install software on each machine so they can get
through this service. The public access point is on its own network so I
might be able to let all traffic from that network have unrestricted access.

Can this be done?
Do I have to buy additional software in addition to Windows Server 2003?
Can I restrict by group?
Can I give the public unrestricted access?

Any input would be appreciated!

Kelvin

Hello Kelvin,

It still is a proxy server, either ISA server or freeware like SQUID.

You can configure different GPO's where you specify the proxy or not. Check
following GPO setting:
User configuration, Windows settigns, Internet explorer maintenance, Connection,
in the right pane choose Proxy settings.

Best regards

Define Proxy Server?

Most people think of a "web proxy" when they think of a proxy. But that is
only a small tiny piece of the whole picture. There are Web Proxys, Socks
Proxys, Winsock Proxys, Application Proxys.

"Proxying" is just simply a competing technology to "Network Addess
Translation (NAT)". They both accomplish the same job in the end but how
they "get there" is done differently. Some Firewalls are based on
NAT,...some Firewalls are based on "proxying",...some Firewalls do both at
the same time (like Microsoft ISA Server, soon to be called Microsoft TMG).
