We have back-up issues with our scheduled back-ups failing when using the
backup-wizad in SBS2003 Standard.

The reason the back-up fails is because of the badmail directory as
indicated in the log posted below.

The backup failures started occuring immediatly after I installed the
TrendMicro antivirus suite on the server. I can't de-select this directory in
the wizard, however if I use NTBACKUP, I can deselect the directory and it
appeared to back-up just fine but the problem is that I cannot keep my
settings and can't define a schedule. Can someone help me?

Thanks,

First, although you are getting errors on backing up those particular files,
that does not mean that the backup itself is bad.

Second, why are you not cleaning out your badmail directory? that would cure
your problems. Microsoft has a KB article on doing it. Here's my post on how
to do it:

Hi GTP,

Thanks for posting here.

From your problem description, I understand this issue to be: the SBS
backup wizard failed due to some files cannot be accessed.

According to your situation, this issue is may caused by that Trend has
scan mechanism which prevent the system to access these files, so the
backup failed. Although, the best solution is contact Trend support center
to troubleshoot this question. I would still be glad to deliver you the
following information and I hope it could help.

I. Clear the bad mail folder C:\Program
Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi1\BadMail, since the mails in this folder are
useless.

II. Configure Trend to exclude this folder for scanning and check if this
will help.

III. Re-run the SBS backup wizard. In the Backup Data summery page, please
click "Exclude folders" button and choose C:\Program
Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi1\BadMail as excluded.

In addition, I would like you to send me (v-) following
logs and I will also check your system for you to see if there is any error.

Please gather the latest NTbackup, SBS Backuprunner logs and Application
log, compress them to a ZIP file, and then send it to us for analysis:

1) Application, System logs around time of failure

2) The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and
Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.

Note: Before reproduce the problem, please open NTBACKUP, click
"Tools"->"Options" and then check "Detailed" on the "Backup Log" tab. Then
reproduce this issue and send the backup log to me (Tools->Report).

3) The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the
folder '%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.

If you have any questions or concerns related to this issue, please let me
know.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Chace Zhang (MSFT)

| We have back-up issues with our scheduled back-ups failing when using the
| backup-wizad in SBS2003 Standard.
|
| The reason the back-up fails is because of the badmail directory as
| indicated in the log posted below.
|
| The backup failures started occuring immediatly after I installed the
| TrendMicro antivirus suite on the server. I can't de-select this
directory in
| the wizard, however if I use NTBACKUP, I can deselect the directory and
it
| appeared to back-up just fine but the problem is that I cannot keep my
| settings and can't define a schedule. Can someone help me?
|
| Thanks,
|

Thank you for the reply. I did as Kevin and you suggested by clearing the
badmail folder.

I excluded the badmail folder in the TrendMicro product.

Microsoft Back-up wizard will not let me exclude the badmail folder. It
states that the folder is a system folder and is used for other programs.

Is there another way to exclude this folder?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi,

Thank you for posting back.

After you excluded badmail folder in Trend, can your backup your server
smoothly?

If not , I suggest that we change the Badmail to another location and
delete the original Badmail older:

1. In Windows Explorer, locate the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\Vsi 1
folder.
2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
3. Type BadMail2 for the name of the new folder.
4. Click Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Exchange -> System Manager.
5. Expand Servers -> <your server name> -> Protocols -> SMTP.
6. Right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server -> Properties.
7. Click the Messages tab.
8. In the Badmail directory box, change the name of the BadMail folder to
BadMail2, and then click OK.
9. Permanently delete the original BadMail folder. To do this, click the
BadMail folder in Windows Explorer, hold down the SHIFT key and press
DELETE.
10. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion. Deleting this
folder may take a long time, depending on the number of files in this
folder.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any further questions, feel free to let me know. I'm happy to
be of assistance and looking forward to your reply.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Chace Zhang (MSFT)

| Thank you for the reply. I did as Kevin and you suggested by clearing the
| badmail folder.
|
| I excluded the badmail folder in the TrendMicro product.
|
| Microsoft Back-up wizard will not let me exclude the badmail folder. It
| states that the folder is a system folder and is used for other programs.
|
| Is there another way to exclude this folder?
|
| Thanks,
| Greg

Hi,

Thank you for posing back.

After I perform a test on my testing machine, it seems we can not exclude
mailroot folder. I think it's by design.

Can you perform a successful backup right now?

If you temporary uninstall Trend on your SBS server, what is the result?

I look forward to your update.

Have a nice day!

Best Regards,

Chace Zhang (MSFT)

| Unfortunatly I know that will not solve the problem since anything in

Is there another good back-up software I can install on my server that will
not give me this problem? Can you recommend a couple and I will do some
research?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi,

Thank you for posting back.

I do understand there are some limitations of Window build-in back up
software (NTbackup).

Also you can choose third-party software to achieve your goal.

Hope this helps.

================================================== ===
This newsgroup only focuses on SBS technical issues. If you have issues
regarding other Microsoft products, you'd better post in the corresponding
newsgroups so that they can be resolved in an efficient and timely manner.
You can locate the newsgroup here:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.aspx

When opening a new thread via the web interface, we recommend you check the
"Notify me of replies" box to receive e-mail notifications when there are
any updates in your thread. When responding to posts via your newsreader,
please "Reply to Group" so that others may learn and benefit from your
issue.

Microsoft engineers can only focus on one issue per thread. Although we
provide other information for your reference, we recommend you post
different incidents in different threads to keep the thread clean. In doing
so, it will ensure your issues are resolved in a timely manner.

For urgent issues, you may want to contact Microsoft CSS directly. Please
check http://support.microsoft.com for regional support phone numbers.

Any input or comments in this thread are highly appreciated.
