You would need to purchase a "Full Version" of
Windows XP and perform a complete "clean install".

Or an update version or a generic OEM version.

Alais, a later OS(vista) considers XP an earlier viersion(which it is!!!),
and WON'T update(upgrade)
FULL version is CORRECT!

You missed the part about "clean install"? One may clean install XP
using an Update, generic OEM or Retail version. With the Update, you do
need to have a 9x or NT CD on hand. Vista has nothing to do with it
except that you need to nuke Vista before proceeding. I like the CDs
that come from Seagate for Seagate and Maxtor drives to do the nuking.

Click your speakers together three times and repeat "there's
no place like 2001, there's no place like 2001"

Lol :-)

Just get a legal XP and install it, format the old vista partitions.
It would be a good idea to locate and save XP drivers for your hardware
before trying to re-install.

If you upgraded to Vista from WinXP, and retained the Windows.Old
folder:

Otherwise:

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
