Windows update fails. Error code shows the above service not running. Changed
the service to auto per problem solving. Service will not start. It is
dependent on RPC svc which is running. Tech net shows Win update is dependent
on this service. This is my first win update since installing sp2 on Win XP.

Anyone have any experience with this issue ?

The following must be set as follows:
Automatic Updates Startup Type is set to Automatic.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service Startup Type is set to Manual.
Event Log Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Go to Start and My Computer. Right-click on the Hard Drive containing the operating system. Click Properties then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, check Check Now. Check both choices. Click Start and then click Yes. Reboot and let Check Disk run.
