the background files seem to have been taken over by nero as they are all
showing as "nero media files" (just fyi). your fix seems to have worked
although all the default backgrounds were not immediately visable when
clicking on the backgrounds icon in the conversation window. i had to click
on more, then they would show up. i had to click each one to make them my
background before they would all show up in the main conversation window when
i click on the backgrounds icon.
also, is it safe to delete all the user folders that show up when you first
type that command in (there's 12 of them, and i only have three users of
messenger on this computer) as most of them say size:0 bytes and folder:user
tile ?
