You can "File > Save As" one-by-one (if you need to preserve the email
titles), otherwise use the "File > Export" feature, but this changes all the
email titles to numbers and makes it difficult to find anything specific in
the future (but at least you'll have them . . . . . ) - test it, you'll see
.. . . . .

Although the displayed mail item names will be changed to numbers in the
export, if you hover over them with the mouse it will show the full title .
.. . . .

You can add a field to Windows Explorer to show the subject.

great answers- just when I was getting ticked off that the file names were
in hex--- at least now I can see the names- but I wonder why MS's
programmers did it this way?

Another simple way is to open a new message, make the subject "backup of ABC folder)
Then split the screen so you see both the new message and your Windows Mail folders
Then highlight all of the messages in the ABC folder and drag them into the new message.
The messages in the ABC folder then become attachments in the new message.
Now in the new message, choose File - "Save As" and save it to a disk with a file name of the subject.
When you need an old message open the saved message and double click on the attachment you want.

Supposedly the file naming system increased performance. They would have
done better to reorganize the database tables to do that.

I am in a small battle with some co workers and how some of our guys in the
feild back up email.....We have lost a few hard drives being in the feild and
we are trying to find the easiest and best way to back up important
emails....The export function seems great....buy i have to ask about the back
up and restore center in the control panel...It seems like i can set it so it
automaticly backs up to a jump drive daily....but i have not found any
referance to that....If we use the export function should i be aware of any
items that we may have to address......I am looking for the past that is the
easiest way.....A built in file back up option would be great....
Ps is this a option in 7...

We can't comment on general backup issues since that's beyond
the scope of this forum.
When backing up emails only, the Export function in Windows Mail
works well enough, although it can't save directly to an external drive.
If you want to back up all aspects of Windows Mail, including
account settings, rules, etc. use this free third party utility:

http://www.staticbackup.com/windows-mail-backup/
http://www.staticbackup.com/products.htm#swmbf

It does not transfer contacts, but you can easily copy and paste
the folder C:\Users\username\Contacts.
