Backing up Library data

What is the best method to back up all the data stored in the library of WMP?
In Sony's SonicStage there is a special tool that does this. However I don't
find any reference to backing up data in the help section of WMP.
If I copy it to an external memory and the hard disc of the notebook is
reset. Can I just transfer it back to the library?

WMP: version 11.0.5721.5268
WOS: Windows XP Professional, version 2002, Service Pack 3

The info as displayed in the library (the database) is stored in the audio
files as well (tagging).
But there are some exceptions to this rule
•custom tags
•personal ratings
•play count

are stored in the library only.
Tagging WAV is not supported either.
A simple test: move a couple of songs to another computer and check if the
info appears in WMP
