Backing up to portable hard drive

Recently had hard drive crash. I want to backup entire system to portable
hard drive. I am using backup in system tools and get the erroe message
error returned while creating volume shadow copy:800423f4 aborting backup.

I have downloaded hotfix 828481, and get the same message. Can anyone help?

Do you have multiple partitions on your drive(s)
and was at least one of those partitions formatted NTFS?
If you have no NTFS formatted drives or partitions
your new drive may need a second partition
(source volume for VSC) formatted as NTFS.

Should we assume you're running Windows Server 2003 or...?
