Backing up Vista Ultimate and getting an error message

When I try running backup and restore center on my pc that is running
windows vista ultimate I am prompted to enter a dvd which I have put
in a dvd+r and a dvd+rw and i get an error message stating that

format was not successful
DVD RW drive (E
the default file system for this disk cannont be detirmined. the
following information might help you reslove the error:

When I click on my computer to try and format the disk nothing will
come up. What can I do to fix this?
