Backspace key does not repeat

I'm not sure I have right group but...

My friends Toshiba/ Vista lap top "backspace" key does not repeat.

You need to wait between key strokes or you cannot delete a series of characters.

AVG8 says no virus.

Windows Defender doesn't run....yields an error message if you try to start it.

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Keyboard
Repeat Delay, Repeat Rate

are the settings you want, I think.

That's a strange one.
Maybe it's a hardware problem. Do the other keys repeat?

Every other key works properly and responds to the
control panel.

I don’t remember exactly but I think the left
arrow key did the same thing.....

As a test, if he has a spare (desktop) keyboard, plug it into a USB port on
the laptop and see how it works.
