Backup DC

Hello all,

I have lost my notes for installing a backup DC in an SBS 2003 environment.

Can anyone point me to the whitepaper - or another set of instructions...?

Hi Jimbo -

1) Create computer account for new server on SBS using the Server Computers
snap-in in the Server Management Console.
2) Join server to SBS domain using http://<sbs_server>/connectcomputer
3) After the member server reboots, log-in and start the Manage Your Server
console. Click to Add a Role, select 'Domain Controller' to start the
DCPROMO wizard.
4) Complete the wizard, and voila . . .

Now - as for whether a backup DC is really worth it in an SBS domain is
another discussion . . . (I for one don't believe in a backup DC in a
single-location SBS domain. Now, if we have multiple locations - a separate
DC at each location can be beneficial . . . )

Thank you for posting to SBS Newsgroup.

Before adding the additional DCs into the SBS domain, I would like to
provide the following information regarding the restrictions on SBS:

1. Only one computer in a domain can be running SBS 2003.

2. SBS 2003 must be the root of the Active Directory forest.

3. Each additional DC must have a SBS CAL. You can use CALs for each user
or for each device.

4. The SBS 2003 computer must hold all the Flexible Single Master Operation
(FSMO) roles.

5. The SBS 2003 computer must be a global catalog server and must be the
licensing server.


Now please follow the steps below to setup the additional DCs.

1. Connect the Windows 2003 server to the network and configure it to use a
static IP address and use the SBS 2003 server as its ONLY DNS server. Join
the server into the domain to make it a member server. (you may have done
this before).

2. After the server has been joined in the domain, click Start->Run, type
"dcpromo" (without the quotes) and click OK.

3. Follow the wizard and when you are asked for the domain controller type
you must select "Additional domain controller for an existing domain". To
complete the wizard you will need the Small Business Server computer's full
DNS name.

4. Configure DNS to forward queries to the Small Business Server computer.

5. Select the server to be a Global Catalog Server.

You should now have an additional domain controller on the network. For
more information you can take a look at the following articles which also
apply to Windows Server 2003 (refer to the "Installing an Additional Domain
Controller for an Existing Domain" section):

I should have been clearer in my original post - but as many might know - I
have been absent from the group for a while and am just now getting back at
it. Good to see familiar names again.

I have done dcpromo a few times before - but am now encountering a "dcpromo
encountered a database error" problem that I was hoping to read up on...I
should have specified this.

Um, and as for all the MS requirements/restrictions Brandy - I thank you for
taking the time to remind me of all of these.....

Thank you for posting back.

I have performed the research based on the error message you provided but I
was unable to do so due to lack of information. Please help me to gather
the following information to narrow down the issue:

1.Attach a screen shot of the error message to this thread.

2.Dcpromo builds two log files (Dcpromoui.Log and Dcpromo.log) in
%SystemRoot%\Debug folder on Windows 2000-based servers. Please paste the
content of these 2 files in the newsgroup so that I can perform the
research.

1.Restart the SBS server, press "F8", and choice to log into Directory
Services Restore mode.

2.Follow this article to do a semantica database analysis on the SBS server:

3.The output might appear to be similar to the following logs:

Thank you for offering great help!

This is what occurs when I follow your instructions. Step 1:

Semantic checker SD's Scanned: 197
Records scanned: 7484
Processing Records.
Error: Inconsistent SD recounts detected
Done.

Step 2:

If I remain in Safe Mode, LDP cannot connect to the server. " Failed to
connect to xxxxServer."

I must reboot to get this to work. So, I reboot, run as asked, wait a long
while - cannot find the mentioned "DS Security Propagation Events" counter,
so I am hoping the NTDS Performance object has returned to 0...

Reboot - try to promote the backup server to backup DC and still get the
same error.

Any ideas?
