While you might have done it under XP it isn't good practice since the
whole point of backing up a partition is to guard against hard drive
failure. If the drive fails and sooner or later they all do, you run
the risk of not being able to access you backup it being on the same
physical disk.

It really depends HOW you backup. What software are you using? Like I
said I don't recommend you do it, but that doesn't mean you can't
physically do it.
