I have 2 40G SATA drives running in Raid 1 and I config Backup to an internal
IDE 140G HD. I have 12G of used space on my server, but when I backup, I
only get about 6G to my backup drive. I would like to get a complete copy of
the drive on my backup HD. Is that possible? The errors shown are all due
to files in use...

Thanks,

Douglas

Hi Douglas,

Are you using the SBSBackup wizard ? If you could copy/paste a backup log we
can have a look.

Douglas,

The volume shadow copy error will have to be solved - this is what enables a
"snapshot" so that in-use files can be backed up. You may have a SQL
database that's not in 'simple recovery mode', or you may not have shadow
copies enabled on the c: drive, or there could be some problem with the VSS
writer that requires a hotfix or update.

833167 A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167

Error 800423f4 appears in the backup log file when you back up a volume by
using the Volume Shadow Copy service in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;828481

http://support.microsoft.com/common/...;offerprophone
In the US, it's 800-936-4900. Elsewhere, see the link above.

You are correct, my volume shadow copy is not enabled. A failure shows up
when starting under dervices : Error 1068. When enabling on drive :
c/properties under shadow copies I find the following: Erro 0x8007042c - The
dependency service or group failed to start.

How do I enable?

Hi Doug,

Volume Shadow Copy is dependent on RPC. I wouldn't think this would be the
issue, as lots of things depend on RPC and I'd expect you'd have other
errors.

You can check your services and see what the status of Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service is, it should be set to automatic, and status should be
started.

Perhaps you've got other errors in your event logs that might help sort this
out ?

Hi Les,

I do have teh PRC set to AUTO and it is started. My error log shows
multiple eroors with KDC: multiple accounts. I don't think this is linked.
I'll try a reboot and make sure all the services are running and enable
shadow copy on my C drive if I can...

Thanks for your help,

Douglas

OK.

If you have errors, it's important to post the entire error message. There's
a copy function (icon) available when you double click an event, that allows
you to paste it into a newsgroup post.

Les,

I'm in BIG trouble! While I was on a client computer, the server kicked me
off asked for a new password and shut down. When I booted, most services do
not start. I can not use the restore function. Can I use the CD's to help
me restore?

A long night ahead,

Douglas

Ouch.

Doug, is this server in production? If so, how long? How many users?

There are likely some key event logs that will indicate the core issue, but
of course we can't see them from here. You can probably use the CDs to
perform a repair/reinstall on several levels, but it's not known on what
level one should do this without more information.

For example, if it's a core windows OS issue, then a boot from CD and repair
might be appropriate. If it's an SBS issue, then running the integrated
setup from add/remove programs might be the right approach.

But the best approach is to have the event logs inspected by someone
familiar with SBS, as it might be something relatively simple.

If you have the time and the means, you might post the errors here, in
chronological order, starting with the system events - and we will do our
best.

Given the time of day, the time of year, etc. (it's bad timing no matter how
you look at it) - you might consider a call to PSS. I don't know what their
holiday schedule is, but if the situation is critical, then this might be
your best option.
