I go through the steps of creating backup settings but when I click the
button to create my first backup I get this message:

file backup could not save your automatic backup settings for the following
reason:
Your backup configuration is not valid. Review your backup settings
(0x000029)
Please try again.

Does anyone have a solution?

Vista won't let you backup to your main hard drive (e.g. C. It makes no
sense to back up to your main hard drive because the main reason for backing
up is the loss of that very hard drive. I back up to an external hard
drive.

I understand your point but vista offers backing up to a hard drive as an
option. I'll try a flash drive or cd and see how that works for me.

I backup to a USB drive, I have done a full system backup, and a restore with
no problems.
I run a file backup to a IDE drive, again with no problems.

I hope this helps
