Backup issues after changing administrator name

Backup has been failing after I have changed the administrator name. When I
try to log in to Backup within Server Management to see why, I am unable to
log in, and get an error saying "Access to the path
"C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temp orary ASP.NET
Files\backup\55b79170\2502a0a\hash.web" is denied."

When I looked at windows explorer, I found there was no folder called backup
within temporary ASP.NET Files folder. How do I rectify this?

Hello,

Thank you for posting to the SBS Newsgroup.

I understand that you failed to Backup your SBS 2K3 after you changed the
Administrator name. If have misunderstood your issue, please let me know.
Please see my suggestions below:

Please add Local Service and Network Service account Read & Execute, List
Folder Contents, and Read permissions to
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322.

Add Local Service and Network Service account Full Control permission to
C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temor ary ASP.NET files.

Run "iisreset" and check whether the issue still occurs.

If the issue still occurs, please help to gather the following information:

- Did you install any software recently, like Windows Server 2003 SP1? If
so, please uninstall it and wait for SBS 2003 SP1.

- Is the logged on user a member of the "SBS Internet Users" group?

- Does NTBackup work?

- Run "eventvwr", are there any error messages in the Application or System
event logs regarding the backup or the tape device? If so, please paste
full error information to me.

- Paste the full content of the files in the folder C:\Documents and
Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data\

The following KB article is for your additional information:

You receive a "Server Error in '/' Application. Access to the path <path>
is denied" error message when you log on to Windows SharePoint Services
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823379

Thanks for your time. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks for your reply, Brandy. I need some help with following your
instructions. How do I add "Local Service" and "Network Service" accounts?

Also, when I navigated to v1.1.4322 folders, selected PROPERTIES, went to
the SECURITYtab, I found five GROUP OR USER NAMES listed there. They were
ACCOUNT UNKNOWN (S-1-5-32-547) which had all permissions allowed except full
control, ADMINISTRATORS (DOMAIN\ADMINISTRATORS) which had all permissions
allowed, CREATOR OWNER, which had no permissions allowed or denied, SYSTEM,
which had all permissions allowed, and USERS (DOMAIN\USERS) which had Read &
Execute, List folder contents and Read permissions allowed and none denied.

These settings were identical for the Temporary ASP.Net Files folder.

Are these in order?

Many thanks

Hello,

Thank you for posting back.

Please see my steps below:

1. Log in the SBS 2K3 server, go to C:\windows\microsft.net\framework.

2. Right click v1.1.4322, properties, Security Tab.

3. Click Add, Advanced, Find Now.

4. Find "Local Service" and "Network Service" in the Search Results pool.

5. Click OK three times.

The code S-1-5-32-547 is Power User. All your configurations in the Group
and User Names are correct.

If my above suggestion still does not work, please try my second method
which I have showed to you on 22nd April, 2005. Please see:

Hope this information answers your question. I am looking forward to your
reply.

Thanks, Brandy. After following your instructions, I am now able to access
the log files. But Backup failed again last night. I got the following
warnings/errors in the application logs

1. Warning - Source: Userenv, User: SBS Backup User, "Windows cannot unload
your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or
services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use."

2. Warning - Source: Userenv, User: NTAUTHORITY/SYSTEM, "Windows saved user
PEAKALPHA\SBS Backup User registry while an application or service was still
using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has
not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."

3. Error - Source: Small Business Server, User: N/A, "One or more components
of Small Business Server Backup failed. For more information, click Backup in
Server Management, and view the log files."

Upon reviewing the log file I found that there were 47 files that backup
skipped with the following message "The process cannot access the file
because it is being used by another process." There were two other files in
the windows/temp directory that were skipped because "Access is denied." The
report at the end of the backup was as follows:

Backup completed on 25/04/2005 at 23:20.
Directories: 2299
Files: 18872
Bytes: 2,391,906,987

Media name: "Small Business Server Backup (01).bkf created 25/04/2005 at

Please let me know what I should do next. Many thanks.

Best regards

Shyam

Hello,

Thank you for posting back.

Please see my suggestions below:

1. Make sure that the steps you changed the administrator name was correct.

You can either manually rename the Administrator account on the computer
running SBS 2003, or, using GPMC, you can automatically rename all the
Administrator account names in the network (including the server). So, if
you just want to rename the Administrator account on the server itself, you
can just use the manual listed below:

To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as a member of the Domain
Admins security group.

1): Open Server Management.

2): In the console tree, click Users.

3): In the details pane, right-click Administrator, and then click
Properties.

4): On the General tab, in the Display text box, replace the previous name
(Administrator) with a new name.

5): On the Account tab, in the User logon name box, type the new name.

6): In the User logon name (pre-Windows 2000) box, replace the previous
user logon name (Administrator) with the new name, and then click OK.

7): After changing the Administrator account name, you need to log off and
then use the new name to log back on as an administrator on the server.

Make sure:

1): Rename the Administrator account only after completing all the tasks
in the To Do List.

2): After changing the Administrator account name, you need to log off and
then use the new name to log back on as an administrator on the server.

2. Go to Server Management\Standard Management\To Do List, re-run the
Backup Wizard.

3. Make sure the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Started. On the SBS 2K3
server, run "services.msc" you will find are in Volume Shadow Copy, make
sure it is started, if not, right click it and select Start.

4. I need you to re-run the backup and paste me the full content of the
event log (Include the error ID).

I am appreciated your time. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,

Brandy Nee

Brandy, I checked your instructions and I did change the admin name properly.
The volume shadow copy service was stopped and on manual, so I started it and
turned it to automatic, then reran backup. I still got a failed backup
report. I am pasting below the complete event log as per your instructions.
As I mentioned, it is fairly long.

Hello,

Thank you for posting back.

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

1. You back up data from a volume that contains a Microsoft SQL Server
database.

2. The recovery model of the SQL Server database is configured to use an
option that is different from Simple.

As creating the volume shadow copy failed, the open files shown in the log
will surely will not be backed up. To solve the issue, you need to contact
CSS (Customer Support Service) for the following hot fix.

Error 800423f4 appears in the backup log file when you back up a volume by
using the Volume Shadow Copy service in Windows Server 2003

To find the support resources, please visit the following website and
access the corresponding localized page:

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

Also install the following VSS update rollup:

833167 A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=833167

Thanks for your time, and I Hope this information helps. I am looking
forward to hearing from you soon.

Brandy:

Thanks for your reply. I set the relevant sql server databases to simple and
the backup worked. To do this, I followed the instructions in the KB828481
article. Since it is now working, I did not download the VSS update rollup.
Would you suggest that I still do so?

Hi Shyam,

We are glad to hear that things are working correctly for you now. Actually
what you have done is merely a workaround. If you want to resolve the
issue, you should still contact our CSS to obtain the update. Please do not
