Backup trouble

The Windows Vista automatic backup always fails.
I get this message:

"An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve this
error. The latest backup set can not be found. Make sure it is accessible and
it has not been deleted. Otherwise create a new full backup. (0x8100000A)."

Yet, when I try a manual backup it also fails, and I get the same message.

What should I do to fix this. My computer hasn't done backups in over a month.

Vista is an automatic back up system if you run it. It asks where you want
to back up to. You did not say where you have tried to back up to in your
question?

This error tells you it cannot find the place you set as back up, ie CD, HD
etc'

I did not set any place to backup. It should have been set to default.
What is going on?

The really stupid annoying think about the built-in Vista backup
prog is that it refuses to backup to a machine running XP-home on
the local network. There have been some kludges involving the Guest
account described in some postings, but they don't appear to work
(for everyone). Third-party backup programs exist that can backup to
such machines of course - some of them are free!
