I recently moved from an XP machine to a Vista PC. I used to run XP's
backup. In Vista it seems to have been replaced by "Backup Status and
Configuration." It doesn't seem to let me select individual files or run it
manually. Am I missing something?

Here are some suggestions by others, you can do it in Vista, you need third
party tool here:
Recommended by Richard Urban:
I use this. It works great. Create a job for each file or folder you want to
back up and place it on a schedule.

huh??? who is "karen" and why would anyone want to use her vb6 program to
backup their computer?!?

op... vista's backup does indeed suck when compared to gool old ntbackup. ms
has given all kinds of crazy reasons for this, mostly they feel that users
are too dumb to use ntbackup so vista's backup was supposed to make it
easier for you.

i use a robocopy script i wrote to do backups and synch at the file level,
and i use symantec ghost to image my drives every week.

When you invoke "Backup Status and Configuration", you will see that there
is an option to "Back up now" -- perhaps that would meet your need for a
manual backup?

I have found that, in general, I do not need to be able to back up
individual files. I have it set up to run automatically once per week to an
external hard drive and it works fine, with minimal attention from me. On
those occasions when I do want to back up an individual file, I have used a
tool called SyncToy:
