I use win XP and want to upgrade the ROM. I know active sync 4.5 dose not
allow to backup WM 5.0 or newer. However can i use Windows Mobile Device
Center 6.1 on a vista machine to back up my data.

Hi,

Yes, you can backup your PIM Data and Files using WMDC on Vista Machine by
synchronizing. Just ensure you select all the information types and it will
synchronize the PIM info into Outlook and the files under the My Documents
folder of the device to the synchronization folder. If you have Outlook on
your Win XP the same can be done using ActiveSync 4.5.

Alternatively, you might also want to explore - http://www.dotfred.net/

If you want to backup the registry on the device, etc., you should look at
Spb Backup. I have it run on my WM5 device every night at 2am, backing up
the PIM data, documents, settings, etc. to the storage card. The backup is
placed in an executable file so, if I have to do a hard reset on the device
for some reason, I can easily run that backup and get the files and settings
back. Of course, if you do have a hard reset, you'll have to reinstall the
applications that you have on the device. I haven't yet used the 2.0
version, but it seems to add a few things that sound very good. Clinton
Finch's review is pretty thorough...

I've been using both Spb Backup (now v2) and Sprite Backup for years.
Both perform flawlessly.
Both now also come with "Migration" options that allow you to backup and
restore between DIFFERENT devices and even OS's. The process isn't a
straight one-to-one restore like a normal procedure, rather it restores
files and settings without

http://www.spritesoftware.com/produc...p/full-edition

The big difference between the two is that Sprite has a tool that allows
backups --directly-- to your PC.
Spb now includes a "Desktop Sync" tool but it's not really the same thing -
it only copies backup archives to your PC once the Backup is finished on the
Mobile Device.

I have a Dell Axim X51v that I've "upgraded" to WM6.1 and the results were
fantastic.
There's a built-in Backup app called "Data Backup" by HTC, but I only
recommend using this for emergencies.
There's two modes:
- Back up all data, and
- Backup PIM Database only

I generally only backup the PIM data. The downside is if you ever actually
use this backup to restore, it often causes more headaches than it fixes -
things like duplicate entries everywhere throughout Outlook following the
first sync.

If you're going to upgrade your ROM and start fresh, the best thing is just
to do is just that - start FRESH.
Reinstall your apps and create a NEW partnership in ActiveSync and just let
it resync everything from scratch.
