Bad after install

Installed sp2 from windows update. Everything downloaded and installed fine.

After reboot, system hung just before login screen. Managed to shut down and
reboot, system came up *very* slowly.

It now appears that not all the update files were installed.

--Remove under CP doesn't work, says file not found and quits.
--Manual un-install using system recovery batch spuninst.txt and reboot
spuninst.exe doesn't work, just goes into a hang.
--Cannot restore from a restore point. Restore says it can no longer protect
my system.
--NO services will load.

Anybody got any ideas on how to remove from this point? Or am I stuck going
nuclear
with the CD??

Reboot tapping F8.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
Otherwise:
Reboot tapping F8 again.
Select Safe Mode at the menu and Then System Restore to time before
issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
