Ever since I had to update to Messenger version 14.0 the sound I hear has
been very garbled and distorted, so it's hard to understand the person I'm
speaking with. They can hear me OK, though. My sound quality was fine with
the older version 8.5, but we have been forced to update. I've tried doing
what the Microsoft rep said - to disable QOS, to uncheck IPSEC, to remove
McAfee, and any 3rd party applications, such as extra toolbars (I only have
the Google toolbar with my gmail, and it never caused a problem), but the
sound is still very bad.

Another little problem - I accidentally clicked Remove on a previous
bacground that was given with the Messenger before in Regular Backgrounds,
and have unistalled Messenger, and reinstalled a few times, but that regular
background has completely disappeared. How do you get back a background that
you have removed? I tried looking in Tools - My Backgrounds, More
Backgrounds, but it isn't there.

I have the exact same problem (re: garbled sound quality) & have tried
everything Microsoft has suggested. Uninstalled, stopped the virus scanner,
etc. It's completely a software issue with the new version everyone was
forced to update to. Microsoft needs a new version or create a fix for this,
it seems this is happening to many that have the update. Uuughh ....

After a lot of try with differents drivers and setup, it seems to me that
this is more often related with a Suyin camera and a Raeltek HD audio card.
Those two togheter seems to cause the problem. There was no issues with
older verions of Messenger live.
The same setting is working correctly with Skype. So it is an Live Messenger
issue.

I have had this problem since I was forced to update to Windows Live 14.0. I
can tell you now it is not just a problem with suyin camera as I have a
Microsoft Livecam and the audio is still garbled. The tedh support team
seems to have no clue as to what to do about this problem and apparently will
not own up to the fact that it is a windows live messenger problem. If an
older version works fine and the new one does not, then it don't take a
rocket scientist to realize it is a problem with the update. But as usual
with microsoft, they will have you make all sorts of changed to your computer
and get you to download a multitude of drivers and you will still have the
issues until they decide to fix their program.

I recently bought a 311-1025 HP mini notebook and have the same garbled sound
with the messenger. Although, on my desktop running the same messenger
version the sound is fine. I did try turning off the Norton firewall and
that seemed to help a bit but not completely. That makes me think it is not
all a messenger problem, but still not sure. I do wish we had an answer
though because it is so annoying.

Greetings Linda,

There's lots of reasons for garbled audio and it can even have nothing to do with you, but
more to do with your contact(s) or their network setup.

Might be worth giving Skype a go if you're interested in a good alternative:
