Bad Microsoft patches?

Does anybody know of any issues with Microsoft update patches causing
problems? Specifically, I have been keeping up on patches, but then my mouse
crashed. Not just crashed, but the Pointer froze on the screen, however if I
kept moving the mouse Icons and such would highlight-up as if a properly
functioning pointer/mouse had just touched that Icon, and if I click, it
responds. I checked IRQ, I/O’s and any other form of conflict I could think
of. Then I reinstalled XP in the Recovery mode, reloaded SP2, and ran for a
week with everything working as it should, “But” as soon as I got all 32
Windows XP service patches back in place, the whole thing starts over again.
Yes I had all the latest Drivers! I think it’s one of the more recent
“Security Patches” but I’m not sure which one. I am hoping someone else has
had, or heard of this problem, and may know of a workaround!

Big problems with KB 905915 and KB 896688......Uninstall them if they are
listed in Add-Remove Programs and see how it goes

Marcus,

Thanks for that information. I looked and saw nothing. However I had
recently done a reinstall (Repair mode), not a new install. Do you think
there could be "Goast entries" if the regestry for those two patches you
mention? This is a real poser, I even swaped out to a diffrent mouse, same
thing.
Thanks again!
Best,
Bhima

Marcus,

After I wrote my last response, I did a search in the regestry for KB905915,
nothing, but then I did a system wide search and got several hits including
KB905915.cab, and KB905915.log. Now the question is, How can I clean this all
up?
Thanks again!

Can't help other than to uninstall via add / remove.........Microsoft knows
of these problems, though they don't seem particularly intereste in solving
them. However, you might give their tech support a call.

Marcus,

Thanks, with the information you provided, some of my dormant PC-tech brain
cells kicked in and I found a directory in the "Windows" folder named
"$hf_mig$" that contains all of the updates that I had installed, including
the two offenders you mentoned. I have deleted those two folders, and I
renamed the folder, and now I'm about to (yet again) re-install XP under the
(R)epair option. I'll post the results somtime tomarrow!

Thanks, you have been very helpful!

I strongly recommend to *NOT* follow Marcus' advice!

Marcus has run into some strange problems with KB896688 and it's successor
KB905915 on Windows *98*, which are more less exclusive on his system.
You are on Windows XP so there's absolutly *NO* relevance on Marcus' advice
in any case.

KB896688/KB905915 are hardly needed security updates for Internet Explorer
fixing holes, which could leed to a compromised system.

I highly doubt, the problems you have mentioned in this thread (mouse) are
in any case related to KB905915.

If you're still going to have a repair installation, please make sure that
you're using a Windows XP installation which has SP2 *integrated* into the
setup files, if you've installed (the recommended) SP2 for Windows XP.
If your Windows XP setup CD doesn't have SP2 integrated yet, see i.e.
http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2000_...pstreaming.htm on how to
integrate SP2 into the setup.

You may run into serious problems with a repair installation of Windows XP
if you're trying to "repair" a Windows version with SP2 installed while SP2
is not integrated in the Windows XP setup CD.

Bye,
Freudi

Ottmar,

Thanks for the input. I'm no MS wizard, but I do know that my problems
started with one or more of the MS updates resently released (past 30 days).
If I was not dealing with my personal computer with all my Saved games, I
would just do as you said. Marcus has offered me a testable soulition, and I
will follow that line of thinking for the moment. I will post my results good
or bad! You may be right on the money, and i will try your course of action
if I hit a brick wall!
Thanks for your valued input!

Best,
Bhima

If you're sure about the time frame, only two also very important
security update seems to be relevant (assuming you've installed the
updates as soon as released by MS via Auto/Windows/Microsoft Update):
KB912919 (MS06-001 aka "WMF patch") and KB908519 (MS06-002).

Ehm, you may have misunderstand my reply. You've stated in a previous
post "and now I'm about to (yet again) re-install XP under the (R)epair
option" so if you have installed SP2 for Windows XP and are trying to
repair your installation with a Windows XP setup CD which does not have
SP2 integrated yet, you may run into serious problems which cannot be
resolved other than starting from scratch.

Marcus' is somewhat "obsessed" on KB896688 / KB905915 since he is having
problems for which he makes the patch(es) responsible for. The truth
seems to be that his Windows 98(SE) system has/have had problems already
but some symptoms are showing up only after installing the patch(es)
mentioned above. The description of your problem doesn't match anything
Marcus predicted, nor are you on Windows 98(SE).

Oh, BTW, you don't have (had) a Beta version of IE7 installed on your
machine, right?

Good luck anyway,
Freudi

Ottmar,

What is the nature of the "serious problems you refer to"? Right now I am
running on "That" XP SP1 platform, and just finished with the SP2 upgrade.
Which should get me back to the pre update/problem state I was in before the
Mouse Crashes began. The problem I see, is the Registry may have "Ghost"
entries from the patches. I will also omit the two you stated, as a
precaution.

I checked out the link you posted, Most excellent! I was aware of
Slipstreaming, but thought it was more of a convenience rather than a
necessity. Guess I'll find out soon enough, LOL!

Thanks again,
Bhima
