Bak ups

yesterday i backed up my system to i could do a full clean re install of
Vista.
now when i try to restore form my external Hard Drive i get and error
message
disk containing backup is not accessable.
make sure it is turned on and connected to the computer.
the disk is connected as i have saved a few files from DVD on to it to make
sure all is working.
i have a maxtor 320GB external HD USB 2.0.
any help please because the wfie is on my back about the photos on it

What programme did you use?
Are you restoring 'from' C? Yes it seems wrong but you have to.
