Attempting to make a complete system backup using Backup and Restore Center
in Windows Visa Ultimate (which I have done successfully before on a terabye
external hard drive) just failed, on the same drive, immediately. Here's the
error:

The backup failed. Failure in a Volume Shadow Copy Service operation.
(0x807800A1). Additional information: The writer experienced a
non-transient error. If the backup process is retired, the error is likely
to reoccur. (0x800423F4)

It was correct; it failed on retry. Help!

OMG! I'd have to work for Microsoft to understans all of this. In any
event, it appears that the hotfix offered does not apply to Vista. Any other
thoughts about which part of this might be helpful?

And you can't figure out if a post is aimed a you or someone else.

It wasn't aimied at you. Look at the post again and you'll figure out
why - I think.

Firstly,

David, the 'link ' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826936)that I
posted was the only reference I could find to your error message and
shadow copy hopefully there will be something there that will lead you
to a solution.

Paul,

I think we're victims of the different etiquettes used for posting on
the newsgroups and the Forums, I'm an ex newsgroup poster, from way
back, now using the Vista Forums exclusively for posting, and so I will,
when I remember , quote when replying to a post from a newsgroup. As
the norm in Forum Posts is to not quote because the forum does this
automatically, people replying from the forums will not quote.

Unless the link between the forum and the Microsoft communities can be
made to automatically format replies correctly we will have to put up
with the differences.

Hope this explains a little and I can assure you that SIW2 can talk and
chew gum and probably juggle at the same time, it's just He/She Is used
to and complying to a different etiquette to the usegroup one.

Every post to a Vista group on that forum goes out to usenet. MOST of
the posts you are replying to on that forum COME from Usenet.

Quoting on the Vista groups is necessary.

Well I guess I missed the boat on that one. Sorry to spark a culture war.
Now ... back to the beginning ... for me ... does anyone have any ideas how
to solve my problem (the one regarding ths shadow copy issue, not my lack of
forum/newsgroup expertise)? Should I be asking the question in another
newsgroup?
