My comments on the above news article:

MS is scared no one will buy windows anymore if they force vista (the worst
OS microsoft ever made) onto people...

so now they are backpedaling.. funny..
I predicted this also.. I knew they could not get rid of XP and force
vista-crapista on to everyone. XP will not leave at all,
until windows7 is out. And if windows 7 is like vista.. well bye bye
microsoft, hello ubuntu (new release today by the way) and MAC OSX

Its great being right all the time.

By "customers" Ballmer means large corporate accounts, not actual users. I
think you know that. I predicted this a year ago too. I am just now
installing XP on my second family computer, as I finally judge it to be
stable enough for family use and my wife is complaining about some online TV
that requires it. We have about five computers in the family, and I will
get maybe four updated to XP by year's end. That includes the new laptop
from Dell that is getting "downgraded" from Vista.

I think "voting for XP" means buying a retail or at least new copy of it
too. Installing a copy that you have on hand or buying one at a computer
swap meet doesn't hardly count.

I'm sure they count the activations.

Let's count the Ubuntu installs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...... Maybe 6 people
downloaded the new version. Just because they thought it was something
usefull.
