I used to get ample warning before the battery became empty. Not so today.
Where can I check for this sound setting? I searched under energy
settings...

Try

Control Panel > Sound > Sounds (tab) > Scroll down to 'Low Battery Alarm'

OK thanks, found it.
Although sounds already seem to be enabled...

Hmm. A few years ago I had a laptop where I set the battery alarm to go off
at some percentage. Let's say 10%, since I can't remember.

Here's the problem. On that computer, at around 15%, the computer shut
itself down automatically, so I never heard the alarm.

By automatically, I don't mean on purpose: at that level, my computer just
couldn't run anymore and fell asleep like a narcoleptic.

I suggest setting the alarm for a silly value like 50% for test purposes.

It had shut down automatically here too, and I assume on purpose (I was away
from the laptop), because after loading with the adapter and restarting
Windows, I got a question wether I wanted to resume the session.
The bad thing though is that this is a timed message and if you don't read
in a hurry, you're too late to answer.

In principle I think it is good that the computer shuts down automatically
BEFORE power becomes too low, but if possible AFTER giving a sound signal,
if al all possible.

Good idea.

Actually, how can I know whether the computer shut down on purpose? I can
(I claim) sometimes read organic minds, but not silicon ones :-)

I really just meant that it shut down before it got to my set level, and I
had fun anthropomorphizing...

And yes, I agree, it's better that it shut down before harm was done!
