Normally the battery shows and has a cable and plug icon when mains power is
on. You may need to full charge the battery before this will happen on first
use.

To find the tick box for this icon right click the taskbar, chose
Properties, Notification Area tab. Under System Icons select Power.

If this is not there your battery is not installed ob you laptop.

Same problem here with HP Pavilion. The batter/power meter always showed -
whether in plug-in or battery mode - ALWAYS. Plus I always had the option to
change this via notification icons in task bar properties.

However, ever since I did a Windows update yesterday, the darn icon is gone
and I have no way to pic this option because the box is grayed out
(non-accessible) in the notification properties screen.

Am sooooo annoyed with this problem as I swtich between AC and battery power
a lot and use the icon to change my power scheme frequently. It's MY
COMPUTER not MICROSOFTS and I AM TIRED OF BEING AT THEIR MERCY.

I WANT MY POWER ICON BACK......WILL BILL GATES PLEASE HELP !

Txs.
Truly frustrated.

This seems to be some bug in Vista, it happened to me too.
I found a fix on some other forum, and it worked for me.

1. First you need to open the Windows "Run" dialog, which you can fin
either in the "Accessories" folder in the "Start" menu, or by pressin
"Windows Key + R"

2. Next type in "regedit" which will bring up the Registry Editor.

3. Now go to "Edit" and "Find..." (or Ctrl + F) and search fo
"iconstreams".

4. When the results come up, delete the keys "IconStreams" an
"PastIconStreams".

5. Restart the computer, and recheck the missing icons in the taskba
properties.

This works, but only temporarily it seems. My icons disappeared again
and I found the keys had come back, but getting rid of them fixed i
again
