I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 and I can't find the IR beaming option.
I see the IR port on the front of the laptop. But see no way to beam
files.

To transfer files via Infra-red, you'd need an IrDA network driver. These
are supplied by the manufacturer of the hardware - in this case, HP.

However there doesn't appear to be any IrDA drivers for this model, on the
HP website. It looks like the infra-red port on the dv9000 is only for the
remote control; it isn't a full network port. So, you cannot use it to
trnasfer files. To support a full IrDA stack, you need a special kind of
infra-red hardware (not just "any old infra-red port").

Infra-red networking is pretty close to dead, anyway - most new devices
support Bluetooth as a better alternative (dv9000 has Bluetooth and
wireless).

Not the answer you wanted, but I hope it helps a bit,

Thanks Andrew..I'd really LOVE to use bluetooth but it says no
bluetooth hardware found. It has the whole "send files via bluetooth"
in the menus but no bt chip that I know of..

any advice?

Hmmm, dunno. Assuming there really is a Bluetooth chip in the machine, then
it needs to be switched ON (may be configurable in the BIOS) and you'd need
all the Bluetooth drivers from the HP site installed. After that, read the
machine's manual and look for clues on the HP website:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...42189&lang=en&

If the machine is still under warrantee, ask HP support. Or ask them anyway,
even if warrantee has expired.

I'd love to help more; but it's quite specific to that model of hardware;
not a general Vista problem.

Hope this helps, anyway.
