Now all I keep getting is Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot
display the requested page. You may find the following resources helpful in
resolving the problem.

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
For self-help options:

Windows Update Response Center

Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows Update Newsgroups
For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues).
Useless!!

Been there done, that! Has anyone any ideas how to fix the problem?

First check your system for viruses even if you
don't believe you could possibly have a virus -

Free Online Anti Virus Scanners -
Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
TrendMicro Housecall Anti Virus Scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
McAfee Security - FreeScan
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp
Symantec Security Check
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp
Computer Associates
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/v...o/default.aspx
BitDefender:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Then check your system for spyware even if you
don't believe you could possibly have any spywares -

Free Anti Spyware programs -
Ad-Aware SE
http://www.lavasoft.de/ms/index.htm
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html
SpywareBlaster 3.2

START > RUN > services.msc

Find Cryptographic services -
The Startup Type should be "Automatic"
Stop that service and leave it stopped for the time being...
Leave the Services window open (minimize it if you want)

Open Windows Explorer
If you find C:\WUTemp folder - rename it to OldWUTemp
If you find C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder - rename it to Old
Downloaded Installations
If you find C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder - rename it to OldCatRoot2
Close Windows Explorer

Bring the Services window back up -
Start the Cryptographic services -

Close the Services window

Restart the computer

Try the Windows Update site again
