Behavior change after recent update

Environment: Windows XP Professional (sp2); MS Office 2003

In the last week I am unable to open JPG files emailed to me from my
graphics person (which I was able to do before). I can open any other JPGs he
sent previously and any JPGs I get from others. He's on a Mac, I'm on a pc.
The behavior is strange and now I'm having a similar issue with Word coming
from another person on a Mac.

For JPGs I cannot open them in any of the many graphic tools I have
including browsers ("no preview available").

* I can forward the jpg to anyone else and they can open it

* I can have the SAME jpg that I forwarded sent back to me and then I can
open it!

* Graphics person can send jpgs to anyone else and they can open it (mac and
pc)

* Copied to memory stick and I can't open it on any other pc, get the same
message

* I FTP'd it to our web server and tried to call it, can't open it

* I emailed it to my gmail account and in the body of the message it shows
TWO files with the same name, one is the image displayed, the other is the
image showing as broken (can't render). I saved both of them locally and ran
a file compare: It seems the one that's not rendering has additional binary
info at the front of the file that includes the file name. The file sizes are
slightly different (same with when I receive it in email and send it to
someone else, the file I can't open is slightly larger).

* I've run virus scan and no problems reported; I've checked file
associations; I've checked everything I could find on the web but nothing
exactly like this reported.

This morning I received a Word doc from a client that I've been getting
files from all along with no problem. She's also on a Mac. I try to open the
file and get "File Conversion" dialog that says "select encoding that makes
your document readable". In the dialog window the binary/hex info has the
file name at the beginning of the doc like the jpgs. Both are defaulting to
"Other encoding" - Japanese (Shift-JIS)

The only thing/new different on my computer is a 3/12/08 Windows Update. I
don't want to uninstall the update for fear that will wreak more havoc on my
relative new/clean laptop, and I suspect I need the update so ... what now?

I can't see what Mr. Dyer sent as a response as being a FIX?

Am I correct in not seeing the fix to this?

We are having MANY users here (at least 20) having this same EXACT
issue.

Very frustrating.

I am also having the exact same problem. I don't think it has anything
to do with the Office SP3 updates, because those came out a while ago,
and you're not being blocked, you just can't view! That's out problem
as well. If anyone out there has a fix for this, it would be greatly
appreicated!! I'm going to try and remove the update and see what
happens! I'll let you know!

Thanks!

Please review detailed explanation of problem. Files are not being
blocked. According to my update history Office 2003 Service Pack 3
(SP3) was installed on October 09, 2007, many months before this
started happening. Thank you.

[Forwarded to Outlook General and Office Update newsgroups via crosspost for
greater exposure.]

I had to use my CrystalBall© because you didn't state what updates were
installed on 3/12/08 or that Office 2003 SP3 had been installed months ago.

Best of luck.

I am also having this problem. We get jpg files from a MAC user and cannot
open them. We removed the update 945432 and everything is good. Is there a
fix for this? I had to turn off Auto update on the computers so it would not
happen again. I've tried all posted updates and nothing works.

I also removed both updates 947355 and 945432 from a machine that was
previously already updated and it did NOT fix our problem. I'm
guessing I'm gonna have to remove Office and re-install? I sure hope
not, cause we have like 50 machines!!

Any help would be great!!

Does anyone have an update on this issue? I am having the exact same
problem on several machines over the last couple of weeks. Started
happening after the last round of Windows/Office updates....

Thanks.

I have confirmed that removing Outlook update 945432 seems to correct
my clients' issues. It appears that JPG attachments that were saved
from Outlook while this update was applied are somehow corrupted.
Even after uninstalling 945432, you can't preview the JPG file
previously saved from Outlook. However, if I opened or saved an JPG
image from Outlook after unistalling the update, the preview worked
just fine. Surely, MS will provide a solution or hotfix soon....
