Bergmoser,

I believe this is by design. There must be one administrator account. You'll
need to create a guest account. It tells you this when you click 'User
Accounts > Change your account type'.

Hi Drew T,Okay, I now see the light by rereading the text

Perhaps you know if it is possible to not have any Users assigned,
would like to see if I could avoid having to click on "Switch User
everytime I wake up the PC from sleep in order to activate the keyboar
which goes dead during sleep

You do not want to follow Drew's advice and create a Guest account. You do
want to follow his advice regarding the need to have at least one user
account with administrative privileges. As for the need to log on when
resuming from sleep, just change that requirement in the Control Panel
Power applet's options.

Here is my usual "boilerplate" about user accounts and Vista:
+++++
You absolutely do not want to have only one user account. Like XP and all
other modern operating systems, Vista is a multi-user operating system with
built-in system accounts such as Administrator, Default, All Users, and
Guest. These accounts should be left alone as they are part of the
operating system structure.

You particularly don't want only one user account with administrative
privileges on Vista because the built-in Administrator account (normally
only used in emergencies) is disabled by default. If you're running as
Administrator for your daily work and that account gets corrupted, things
will be Difficult. It isn't impossible to activate the built-in
Administrator to rescue things, but it will require third-party tools and
working outside the operating system.

The user account that is for your daily work should be a Standard user, with
the extra administrative user (call it something like "CompAdmin" or "Tech"
or the like) only there for elevation purposes. After you create
"CompAdmin", log into it and change your regular user account to Standard.
Then log back into your regular account.

If you want to go directly to the Desktop and skip the Welcome Screen with
the icons of user accounts, you can do this the same way as in XP:

Ok Malke, followed your advice and now have only "Administrator" an
"Standard User" accounts active."Guest Acct." is turned off. This ha
not changed the necessity to hit "Switch User" in the menu in order t
bring the keyboard back to being active after resuming from sleep mode
It appears as though there is no way to solve this issue

Yes there is. You just didn't find it. Look in two places:

1. Power options
2. Screensaver options

It is also possible I misunderstood what you are talking about. I'm assuming
that you don't want to go back to the Welcome Screen after the machine has
slept. If this is correct, then the above applies. If you are having
difficulties waking your computer, then that's a different story and you
should post back with what kind of computer you have and a clear
description of the issue.

Yes I now realize there wasn't enough information given in my original
post.

Computer is a Compaq model SR5010NX about 2 1/2 years old.
2 GB of ram/2.47 GH
OS is Vista Home Basic

Everything functions just fine, except after resuming from sleep the
keyboard is inoperative (dead). To reenergize the keyboard it is
necessary to go to Start >Switch User>Enter , then all is fine and
working normaly. It is strange that even though the keyboard is dead I
can hit any key and the computer wakes up.
So all in all there is no trouble putting it to sleep or even hibernate
and waking up is no problem at all.

Screen saver was mentioned in one reply but cannot find that on this
computer.

For the dead keyboard, try updating your video drivers. You should only get
drivers from the HP (Compaq) website for your specific model computer.
While you're at the site, look to see if there are any other driver updates
as well as power management updates. If there are, download and install
them.

As for the "on resume, display logon screen", right-click on an empty area
of your Desktop. Left-click on Personalize. Left-click on the Screensaver
link. You will see the box that says "on resume, display logon screen".
Uncheck it. There is also a link to power settings there. This website has
pictures:

Ok Malke and many thanks for all your replys. I did update the Video
in this case it is called) "Graphics Update" also updated the keyboar
drivers and BIOS drivers
Did find the screen saver page and it was already unticked

So far there is no change in the way anything works. Forgot to tell yo
that I performed two System Recocery proceedures and that had no effec
on my issue. Appears as though there is a big mystery about thi
machine
