The bundled defragmentor with Vista Home Premium does not appear to
work. If I try to run the defragmentor, it will run and then say that
disk performance can be improved by defragmenting. This sequence
happens over and over.

I have tried Ausiologics but have heard negative things about it.

I have also tried Defraggler and it is extremely slow but seems
thorough. Took over 8 hours to defrag 700+ files.

Can anyone recommend a free defrag program that works well with Vista.

Thanks

The bundled defragger does work.

Forget all about defragging. Vista looks after it for you. The bundled
defragger runs very slowly in the background, at the lowest CPU priority and
the lowest I/O priority, so it doesn't interfere at all with your work.

And don't worry - sometimes it runs for days before it completes. This is
normal.

Also, be aware that the bundled defragger doesn't mess with the file layout
optimisation that Vista does in order to speed up boot times, and so forth,
which may not be the case with third party defraggers.

Seriously, just forget about it and get on with using your computer.

Hi

I find Auslogics GUI useful as it gives some idea of what may b
limiting your attempt to shrink a volume, for example

I use sysinternals Contig - I figure it's got to be good coming fro
them. If you don't want to configure it using the command line there i
a GUI by excessive software from here

'Power Defragmenter Review - Power Defragmenter Download - Softpedia
(http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/win...ew-25891.shtml

- download it and it will prompt the Contig. download - even allows
Power ( double ) defrag

'Contig v1.54

Diskeeper 2008 is also a choice. It's not free, but you can download the
free trial versions for evaluation to see if it meets your requirements.
AFAIK, the free third party Vista defrag solutions currently available do
not support shadow copy aware defragmentation (for 4k cluster size) , and
also lack the ability to defragment the MFT. Something to note, if these
factors are important for you.

Best regards

Take a look at "PC-Mag" site for a simple defrag program called
appropriately "PC Mag Defrag." It's a simple but gets the work done
defragger. Cheap too if you don't have a subscription.

Again, what negatives about Auslogics?
I've been using it for over a year on my XP desktop and installed it on
my new laptop Vista machine. Runs great.

The best free defragger for Vista is Smart Defrag from Iobit. The only
drawback is that it doesn't have boot-time defrag capabilities.
