best way to backup from standby? task scheduler?

Hi!

I'd really appreciate if some of you would share their thoughts on the
following issue:

I am looking for the best way to backup using Vista Business edition.

By "best way" I mean:

- least complicated
- most automated
- most comprehensive

I played around with the built-in backup software. My goal was to run a
backup at the same time every night.

I was surprised to find out that Vista doesn't offer the option to wake the
computer in case it is in standby. Since I would like to switch of my
computer once I leave the office (it is a laptop, and can get quite hot),
leaving it on just so it can back up a few hours later isn't really an option.

My next thought was to set a power profile that would send the computer to
standby after a few minutes of inactivity. This is fine, only that then I
have to start the backup manually once I switched the powerprofile (I don't
leave the computer at the same time every day, in fact, this varies
drastically).

I was thinking of using task scheduler to run the backup. Is this possible?
If yes, given that I have already set my backup options, how do I get task
scheduler to run the specific backup I want (i.e., what is the specific
command line)?

Can anyone think of a better way to backup daily in a more automated way
(but withput using third party software, even if it's free)?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

PS: just if you are wondering, the computer will be backing up to an
external harddrive, which will switch itself on/off with a timer.

Yep, you can do that from standby.

Set "Wake the computer to run this task' on the Conditions tab for your
backup task in Task Scheduler

You could use "xcopy /d" in a batch file to copy only the files that have
changed.

Thanks
I am trying to use the standard Vista programs.
A Bat file with xcopy would work, but there is no compression.
ZIP is another choice, but 10GIG backup files are a little unstable an
difficult to work with
