Greetings Adam,
Due to electricity rate increases I've had my mother do exactly this recently. In general,
she's just informed her contacts of what's going on, and they've been sending her offline
messages. It appears to be working great, and she usually seems to have a few offline
messages when she signs in, at least when I'm around.
Generally, due to compatibility, new statuses really aren't being considered.
I don't disagree with you though, it's pretty much proven that people are more apt to send
messages to an online/away client then an offline one. However, there's no reason people
can't be re-trained.
