The Big Black Void - 15 mins worth

My Vista Ultimate x64 machine is experiencing very slow startups but only
part of the actual startup process is slow. The BIOS information screen
clears and the green progress bar goes through the motions and then it
happens... the Big Black Void. This is the period between the green
progress bar and the giant orb and login screen appearing and sometimes
lasts 15 minutes. During this time the screen is completely black and
absolutely nothing appears to happen. It can be as quick as 5 minutes but
averages about 8 minutes. When Vista finally starts, everything seems to
run at the correct speed.

What is causing the Big Black Void? The machine has 2 x 15K RPM U320 SCSI
HDDs, 4GB RAM and a nVidia 8800GTX GPU so it's no slouch.

And loving it,

Nice machine.

Try pressing F8 on bootup and select the option for feedback while booting
up. I do not remember what it is called, but I think there is one different
from booting up in Safe Mode.

What you are looking for is the scrolling list of things that the machine
goes through while booting up. See what it pauses on.

If I am imagining the option to see what is being loaded, as in Safe Mode,
you can select this boot option easily using VistaBootPRO. I can remember
doing this ages ago, with XP, but I do not remember how I did it. Maybe it
was an argument in boot.ini.

No. It's just a list of things as they are being loaded, like you get when
starting in Safe Mode.

Hi Q,

If you have a Vista installation DVD, you might try running a Startup
repair to see if it will help. This tutorial will show you how.

You should also check your startup programs to see if one of them may
be the culprit by disabling them one by one as a test and enable them
back later. This tutorial will show you how.
