big problem to update after reinstallation

Win XP SP1 have been reinstalled and it appears to work normally but
whenever I try windowsupdate nothing happens . I have tried automatic
update but its on 0% all the time. And when I try manual update from
explorer I only get the message: 'Checking for the latest version of the Win
Update Software....'
but nothing happens , what can I do here?

Did you enable the firewall before connecting to the Internet? If not,
you're almost certainly infected with a couple of worms!!
If you've added nothing else, then I'd suggest reformatting again,
reinstalling enabling the Firewall, and then trying again
