I've had problems with windows update on multiple computers now. It's this
same issue. Basically and update will download forever, for instance it will
say 10 mb of 10 mb downloaded, then it will changed to 15 mb of 15 mb
downloaded and it will do this forever and it actually got over a gig for the
msn messenger update. Also, my machine will spend hours chugging away with
the update.exe process, and the only way i can end it is to shut off the
update service. How do i get updates to work correclty. So far i've had to
install them all manually, but that's getting annoying. Does anyone know
what's going on? Could I have some sort of software conflict?

See if your windowsupdate.log has the same sort of apparent loop
in it that I analysed for poster "mike g" last month:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...e-834b53020f7b

My suggestion then was to see if using a customized install
(e.g. one patch at a time) would let him avoid the problem.

Good luck

I discovered through searching this site it's my McAfee install. However I
couldn't find a patch or fix to the problem so i uninstalled the product. I'm
not going to use virus software that interferes with windows update. I think
that sort of defeats the purpose of it.

Thanks for you help though. Ultimately a customized install works as a work
around.
