Bigger Display pictures

I think it would be cool to see a feature where you click on a user's display
picture and you are able to see the actual picture they used (not the scaled
down version.)

Well at this point, Messenger resizes the image and stores it and then uses that version.
So, they're not even connected to the originals.

You could always just ask them to send you a copy of the image

I totally agree with Brad. Bigger pictures would be very cool. Remember
that not all users are good with picture editing and they sometimes display
pictures that are far away taken.
