This update will not update automatically or manually. I'ved tried using
Windows Update automatic through website, and it fails. I've tried letting
Windows download automatically with the automatic auto update and it fails.
I've tried downloading manually from windows. (It downloads fine.) And when I
try installing it manually from that file it fails. I need some ideas. No
responses so far to other people with similiar problems have been helping at
all. The update is downloaded fine. But fails repeatedly on all kinds of
installations I've tried so far. (Manual WU site, Automatic WU, and Manual WU
download and manual install of update.) Please help.

Hi,
Please post the contents of c:\windows\KB842773.log
That will show the error code causing the install to fail

When you tried to install manually, what happens?
Do you get any error message?
The log file is not showing the error.
Also, it seems that the package installed successfully on 7/27
Do you see this update installed in Control Panel->Add/Remove programs?
(please look for KB842773 in the title)

When trying to install manually I get up to the window that reads:

Please wait while setup inspects your current configuratio, archives your
current files and updates your files.
Inspecting your current configuration (shows an empty fill/completion bar)

Details (box)
(Includes text Inspecting:

While on this window, the computer's HD light is blinking fairly rapidly as
if it's doing something, but nothing ever happens. No movement on progress
bar or in the Details window at all.

The update KB842773 is not one of the items lists in the Add/Remove programs
from the control panel.

Also, ocassoinally the automatic windows updater will show a little icon in
the system tray showing that an update is available for installation. It is
the KB842773 update. When I click on it to update it asks me whether I would
like to do a custom or express install. I can click either of them and will
get the same response. A new window pops open saying that the installation
failed. Would it help if I completely deleted the KB842773.log file and try
to get another one? Most of the time I have been manually trying to cancel
the installation after it has continued to hang for a fairly long period of
time. Should I wait a lot longer and hope it finally decides to stop just
doing nothing?

Without waiting for response I've been letting the installation continue
running with nothing really happening. This text has been appended to the end
of the log file. (kb842773.log) I put in a couple lines of overlap so you
could tell exactly where it is. Perhaps some extra info in there will help?

Hi

AdronDax, I have created a batch file that does most of those steps
in KB article 822798 for you if you don't feel for doing them manually
yourself:

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.

If it doesn't help for your problem, then you could do all the steps
in KB article 822798 manually yourself to cover what the batch file
doesn't do.

Thank you very much for your assistance. I used the first option in that link
and it fixed the problem. Solution was as follows:

Method 1: Rename the Edb.log file
To resolve this behavior, rename the Edb.log file, and then try to install
the program again. To rename the Edb.log file, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst

Thanks again, Sudheer!!

If you are someone who was having a similar problem but this fix did not
help you, definitely check out that link in previous message as it has
several other methods for resolution that may help you out. =)
