When you tried to install manually, what happens?
Do you get any error message? The log file is not showing the error. Also, it seems that the package installed successfully on 7/27 Do you see this update installed in Control Panel->Add/Remove programs? (please look for KB842773 in the title) -- Sudheer GN Microsoft, BITS This posting is provided "As Is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. When trying to install manually I get up to the window that reads:
Please wait while setup inspects your current configuratio, archives your current files and updates your files. Inspecting your current configuration (shows an empty fill/completion bar) Details (box) (Includes text Inspecting:While on this window, the computer's HD light is blinking fairly rapidly as if it's doing something, but nothing ever happens. No movement on progress bar or in the Details window at all. The update KB842773 is not one of the items lists in the Add/Remove programs from the control panel. Also, ocassoinally the automatic windows updater will show a little icon in the system tray showing that an update is available for installation. It is the KB842773 update. When I click on it to update it asks me whether I would like to do a custom or express install. I can click either of them and will get the same response. A new window pops open saying that the installation failed. Would it help if I completely deleted the KB842773.log file and try to get another one? Most of the time I have been manually trying to cancel the installation after it has continued to hang for a fairly long period of time. Should I wait a lot longer and hope it finally decides to stop just doing nothing? Without waiting for response I've been letting the installation continue
running with nothing really happening. This text has been appended to the end of the log file. (kb842773.log) I put in a couple lines of overlap so you could tell exactly where it is. Perhaps some extra info in there will help? 6.329: Service Pack started with following command line: 164.047: Message displayed to the user: Are you sure you want to cancel? 164.047: User Input: YES 4.938: ================================================== ============================== 4.938: 2004/09/11 15:00:21.187 (local) 4.938: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\62f994895 b2e7156099353faaa0580c0\update\update.exe (version 5.4.15.0) 4.938: Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE 4.953: Service Pack started with following command line: -q -z -er /ParentInfo:8e08803067c32c44811ee47029122da9 897.766: InstallInfCatalogFile: Installing c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\62f994895 b2e7156099353faaa0580c0\update\KB842773.cat as _000000_.cat... 897.891: VerifySize: Unable to verify size: Source = NULL: c:\windows\_000000_.cat 901.781: InstallCatalogFile: InstallCatalog failed for c:\windows\_000000_.cat; error=0xfffffdee. 901.828: InstallInfCatalogFile: Installation failed; error=0x00000002. 906.219: InstallInfCatalogFile: Installing c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\62f994895 b2e7156099353faaa0580c0\update\KB842773.cat as _000000_.cat... 906.219: VerifySize: Unable to verify size: Source = NULL: c:\windows\_000000_.cat 911.047: InstallCatalogFile: InstallCatalog failed for c:\windows\_000000_.cat; error=0xfffffdee. 911.078: InstallInfCatalogFile: Installation failed; error=0x00000002. 911.078: IsInfFileTrusted: ValidateSingleFileSignature Failed: STR_FAILED_INF_INTEGRITY 911.094: KB842773 Setup encountered an error: Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Download and run it. If it doesn't help for your problem, then you could do all the steps in KB article 822798 manually yourself to cover what the batch file doesn't do. -- torgeir, Microsoft MVP Scripting and WMI, Porsgrunn Norway Administration scripting examples and an ONLINE version of the 1328 page Scripting Guide: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...r/default.mspx |

Thank you very much for your assistance. I used the first option in that link
and it fixed the problem. Solution was as follows: Method 1: Rename the Edb.log file To resolve this behavior, rename the Edb.log file, and then try to install the program again. To rename the Edb.log file, follow these steps: Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst Thanks again, Sudheer!! If you are someone who was having a similar problem but this fix did not help you, definitely check out that link in previous message as it has several other methods for resolution that may help you out. =) "Sudheer GN [MSFT]" wrote: > Hi, > It seems that something is wrong with cryptographic service on your machine. > Please refer to > http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=822798 > and see if the troubleshooting steps mentioned in that article help > > -- > Sudheer GN > Microsoft, BITS > > This posting is provided "As Is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. > Use of included script samples are subject to the terms specified at > http://www.microsoft.com/info/cpyright.htm > > > "AdronDax" <> wrote in message > news:008EA04E-D5A1-4682-B421-... > > Without waiting for response I've been letting the installation continue > > running with nothing really happening.
