I had the same problem and this is what I did to overcome this.
First, do nothing with the automatic update icon in the system tray.
Download file directly Microsoft.com, install after download and reboot your
computer, if it ask to do so :
Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)
